Roxburgh Gorge Trail

You have nothing but 'Thyme' in the raw Otago wilderness

LOCALS SAY

This shared trail includes a boat transfer and is highly recommended in late spring when the wild thyme bursts into glorious purple bloom, scenting the air pleasantly. Otago is renowned for its colours so the purple blooms add a lovely new tone to the golden tussocks, greenery of the trees and grasses and grey bed stone rock.

Trail Notes

‘Thyme’ and time again – you’ll be bowled over by the spectacular scenery of the Roxburgh Gorge trail. You’ll be following the Clutha River through the raw native Otago landscape past remnants of the historic gold mining era. The track is well maintained and quite popular – it’s also two ways so watch for walkers and other riders. The trail is well maintained and easy to follow with a few climbs and can take you a full day if you pack a picnic.

The Roxburgh gorge trail departs from Alexandra through Butchers creek and David Bend to Doctors Point, where you’ll need to take a boat transfer to Shingle creek (although plans are underway to continue building along this part so that two pieces of trail eventually link). Kicking off in Shingle creek, make your way through Elbow Creek and Hidden Valley to Lake Roxburgh Village where the trail joins up to the Clutha Gold Trail.

But wait, there's more...
